Bob’s comments in this month’s magazine were spot on. I particularly appreciated his likening ‘get-home-itus’ to temporary insanity.
A recent trip home by a ‘Mr. Smith’ from ‘KXYZ’ (names deleted to protect the guilty) revealed how pervasive this can be: grounded mid-route by worsening weather + out-of-date IFR currency; sit out out a day and a half, then punching through low clouds to get home. What was ‘Mr. Smith’ thinking? Will ‘Mr. Smith’ ever grow up? Only time will tell.
Agreed fully. One of the best pieces of advice I was given was “Always pretend your mission is to fly a box of rocks.” I follow that strongly. I also agree with his point about always flying with your laptop. I always carry my work laptop with me when traveling so I can work remotely if need be.
